12 CREATORS AT THE SERVICES OF KINGS
By an Edict in 1543, François I, King of France entrusted the task of supplying wine to the royal court to 12 wine traders. Thus were born the 12 “special wine merchants following the court”.
They were allowed total freedom to put together the finest wines and even to travel beyond the borders of the kingdom, in order to surprise the taste buds of the King and his prestigious visitors in Versailles.
This royal tradition of granting the special right to a set number of merchants was to last for over two centuries through to the French Revolution, and enjoyed its golden age at Versailles itself.
